Electrical fires – are you at risk!

With the use of electrical items rising in the workplace with items such as mobile phone, tablets, the always busy laptops and now the move into “E-cigarettes”, it may be worth noting the risk to your business from electrical fires!
As part of your Fire risk assessment, consideration should be given to the installed electrics at the consumer unit / electrical cupboard. Depending on what your business is or whether you require an entertainments licence dictates when you need to have a competent electrician complete the tests known as Fixed Wired Testing (FWT).
You also need to consider the electrical items which you may have that are fitted with a plug! This test known as a Portable Appliance Test (PAT) is completed annually on items over one year old if manufactures in the UK (B.S. mark) or in Europe (C.E.mark)
Lastly as part of your fire risk management you should consider the risks from items with Lithium batteries fitted such as the E-cigarettes. These have blamed for a number of fire recently with the Galaxy 7 Note being the latest high profile producer.

The risk of an electrical fire in your premises is ever present as electrical fires are one of the most common causes of fire (along with smoking and arson!). If you do not take action to prevent an electrical fire starting you may lose your business, your reputation or even worse, your (or your employees) life!

If you are unsure you should ensure a competent electrician checks your installation and plugged items or get in touch with us here at Fire Risk Assessments NI for some free advice!
